Settlements (PPD and PTD)
Getting a Settlement for Your Work Injury
If you have suffered a work injury, you may be eligible for compensation in the form of permanent partial disability (PPD) or permanent total disability (PTD) benefits. While these benefits can be paid out over time, they typically take the form of a one-time workers' compensation settlement.
The law firm of Keefe & Griffiths has a history of more than 50 years of helping injured workers throughout Illinois and Missouri. When you enlist our attorneys, you can be confident that we can help you get a fair permanent partial disability (PPD) settlement.
What Do PPD Benefits Cover?
Permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits are intended to compensate a worker solely for any permanent disability caused by a work injury. Lost wages, medical care and other issues are covered by other benefits.
How PPD Benefits Are Calculated
Permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits are calculated based on a very complex formula.
Every part of the body is assigned a relative value, based on its importance to the overall body function. For example, the value of the shoulder is higher than the value of a toe.
Every injury is assigned a percentage of disability by one or more doctors. 100 percent indicates complete disability of the body part. One percent indicates a relatively minor disability. No one doctor’s opinion is binding, or necessarily even correct.
From here, the issue becomes even more difficult. The value of an injury can change from year to year. An injury that might have been worth one amount in 2007, may be worth a completely different amount in 2009.
